Read the text and find additional information, then create a timeline detailing Latvia's cultural evolution from individualism to collectivism and further back to individualism. Mention the historical era of farmsteads and its importance to individualism, the Soviet period and its focus on collectivist principles, and the transition from Soviet ideology to Western individualism. For each event, provide a concise summary (2-3 sentences) outlining its influence on Latvian cultural values.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Historically, Latvians expressed individualism, as reflected by their farmstead lifestyle focused on self-sufficiency and harmony with nature. Each farmstead functioned as an independent entity for a single family, expressing the Latvian respect for space, utility, and beauty. During the Soviet period, collectivist principles such as collectivism, heroism, and commitment to public interests replaced individualism. Latvia is aligned with Western individualism, prioritising personal interests and self-development. Individualism, characterised by independence, initiative, and creativity, is perceived as fostering economic development. However, it also presents issues such as polarisation and insecurity. Latvian society continues to exhibit specific collectivist characteristics, particularly in economic and social interactions; however, individualism is progressively valued especially among younger people.
